The Petersen Type C axe was developed during the 7th century and eventually came to the Nordic countries through Western and Central Europe; Several examples of this type have been found in Sweden and Norway. 

Our, Filunger, a type C bearded axe based on an 11th century find from Gotland Sweden, is primarily a tool for woodworking. It’s weight and wedge-like shape make it ideal for easily felling and splitting timbers and removing material from a work piece. Historically, axes of this type would have been used to make and smooth the planks used to construct houses and build boats.
